Here's a magic trick you can practice at home. You can transform a dime into a quarter! Here's how:

EFFECT:
The Magician holds a dime in his/her hand, then with a magic move it instantly changes into a quarter!

PROPS:

  • A dime
  • A quarter
  • A piece of cellophane tape formed into a ring about the size of your index finger. The sticky side should be on the outside.

SETUP:
Place the tape ring on the back side (tail side of the quarter. Hold the dime by its edges with the index finger and thumb of the right hand. If you turn your right hand so that the palm is facing you, you will see the face of the dime. Now hold the quarter behind the dime at an angle of 90 degrees to the time.

ROUTINE:
Display both coins as one in the setup position. Your audience will only see the dime. The dime blocks the front edge of the quarter while your index finger and thumb hide the top and bottom edges. No one will suspect that there is anything more than a dime in your hand since you are holding it so openly and plainly at your fingertips.

With the left thumb, push the dime down onto the sticky tape side of the quarter. At the same time put your left index finger on the other side of the quarter. Squeeze the dime and quarter together so they stick. Then take the two coins between the left thumb and index finger. The index finger should be on the quarter and the thumb on the dime.

Turn your left hand so that the face of the quarter can be seen by your spectators. The dime, now stuck to the quarter, should be hidden behind it. Display the face of the quarter for a moment. Then drop it tail side down onto the palm of your right hand. Since they are taped together the two coins should not separate and there should be no clinking sound. By showing the audience the quarter so openly and dropping it, no one will suspect that a coin is hidden on the back side.
